DISCOVER: Edgy pop beauty Freia

Here at CelebMix, we love introducing you to new talent who we believe will blow your mind. If you love your pop music with a tribal edge, then you’re going to adore singer-songwriter Freia.

The 22-year-old originates from Bucharest, Russia and is about to explode onto the music scene with her unique style of music. You may already be familiar with her urban tone, as she featured on Kungs’ ‘Bangalore Streets’ last year. Her original music has also been featured on high-profile US TV shows, including Roadies.

However, 2017 is set to be the year where Freia truly puts her stamp on the industry. Her current cover of The Weeknd’s ‘Starboy’ shows off her signature style, as she manages to intertwine her bold vision into the popular song. It’s evident that Freia is here to shake things up, and we welcome her with open arms.

We recently had the chance to ask Freia about her music style, songwriting process and much more. Check out her Q&A below.

Your real name is Victoria, so how did the name Freia come about?

I feel that this name describes perfectly my tribal vibe. Freia is inspired from Freja, the Norse Goddess Of Love, and I chose it because I really love how it sounds.

Were you always set on becoming a singer, or did you originally have other plans in mind?

Honestly, I never had other plans; I’ve been singing since I was 5 years old – since then I knew that this is what I want to do all my life.

What can we expect from your solo music?

A breath of fresh air! I describe my music as a unique pop, electro with tribal sounds.

Can you talk us through your songwriting process? Do you have a specific way of tackling a song or does it vary with each one you write?

I usually write and compose with my producer, Quba. He knows me very well, so the songs that we are working on represent me 100%. Usually, when I listen to an instrumental, it almost instantly gives me an idea of the story; the lyrics – and I go from there. I listen to my heart and always write about the experiences from which I learned the most.

How have your European roots influenced your music style?

I spent my childhood bouncing between the underground vibes of numerous capital cities and the boho vibes of the countryside. I grew with that ‘wild’ and ‘free’ spirit and that definitely influenced me and, now, my music.

We notice that you recently filmed your first official video in Kiev. What was that experience like, and can you tell us anything about the video concept?

I can’t tell you anything about the video concept yet, but I will tell you that it was the most amazing experience I have ever had! I was surrounded by the most inspiring and motivated team and even though we all had to face a very very low temperature, we managed to make a great video! It blew my mind!

People may already know your voice from Kungs’ track ‘Bangalore Streets’ – how did this collaboration come about?

Actually, I met Kungs when I and Quba went to London to record ‘Bangalore Streets’. Before that, he sent me a demo and we had a couple of days to make the voice lines and the lyrics. I am so happy that we made this collaboration! He is an amazing young producer!

We’re loving your cover of The Weekend’s ‘Starboy’ – what made you decide to cover this song?

I’m so happy that you like it! I love The Weeknd and when I first heard ‘Starboy’ I thought of how cool Quba and I could make it sound as a cover – with all those tribal vibes.

Your music has already appeared on ‘Roadies’ in the US – how does it feel to hear your music being used on high profile TV shows?

When I saw the episode and heard my song, I started crying. It’s overwhelming to see one of my dreams coming true.

What’s your favourite thing about performing live?

The energy the audience gives me, how people react when they hear their favourite song of mine and when they sing my lyrics. There are no words to describe this, it’s just the best feeling in the world!

What do you hope that people will take from your music?

I am an emotional person and I had a lot of moments when I needed to be strong- so I wished to encourage people through my music to be strong, independent, confident and never to be afraid to tell how they really feel. Being emotional and sensitive is not a sign of weakness.

Thank you to Freia for her time! Keep up to date with her on social media: Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
